FLIGHT ATTENDANTS

flight attendants by brian finke

The underground world of flight attendants is rarely documented. The unspoken laws, the routines, the subculture commonalities – they’re all there, but the only way to really understand a flight attendant is to be one. Unless, you come upon the fine work of Brian Finke. A talented photographer and storyteller, Brian spent two years traveling on Delta, Hawaiin, JetBlue, Hooters Air, Air France and others to document the life of flight attendants. As one gallery described his work, “Finke’s ”http://brianfinke.com/flight.html" target="_blank">Flight Attendant series is a vibrant collection of photographs documenting the lives of those adventurous souls who choose to work at 40,000 feet. Shot before, during, and after flights, the photographs capture the allure of the high-flying profession alongside the more quiet moments of the attendant’s daily lives." We really enjoyed this series. We’ve posted a few photos below. Click Read More to view.

KYOTO KOKUSAI HOTEL

Kyoto Kokusai Hotel

Rooms are great canvases. Lately, we’ve noticed a growing trend where hotels invite designers, artists, and creatives to come in and remodel a series of rooms. Brands like Ace Hotel nicely execute this concept and continue to demonstrate how specialized rooms resonate with their guests. Another example is Kyoto’s Kokusai Hotel. They partnered with one of our favorite architectural firms, Kengo Kuma and Associates, to remodel two rooms. The outcome is beautiful. Kengo Kuma’s signature lines, clean application and overall easy sophistication beams from the remodeled rooms. Simplicity matched with comfort are just a few of the traits we found appealing about their work. We’ve posted a few images from the project below. Click Read More to view.

VIRGIN ATLANTIC CLUBHOUSE

virgin atlantic

The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse – the newly opened lounge at Newark International Airport – befits its namesake in the best way possible. Located airside, post security, it beckons travelers with recessed lighting and black lacquered walls. The entryway creates a marcasite effect similar to the setting on a sidewalk outside a ritzy afterhours boĆ®te. Inside, soft ambient music plays a subtle backdrop to a landscape of passengers relaxing with their copies of the Financial Times or flipping through their iPads as they sip cups of tea. We recently visited Virgin Atlantic’s new clubhouse to experience their latest effort in making travel more comfortable.
