Places to Shop: Louis Vuitton's Stephen Sprouse Installation

Late last month we reported on Louis Vuitton and their continued efforts to push the envelope with brand collaborations. The Arne Quinze installation in Munich was beautiful and well executed. It appeals to our abstract sensibilities. And now, the installation going up at LV’s Soho store extends the growing excitement surrounding the brand. Hitting with a similar orange hue, they’re preparing for the Stephen Sprouse opening. Exciting times!

This Friday, Deitch Projects will be showcasing Stephen Sprouse’s work at an opening entitled Rock on Mars. This exhibit will run until February 28, 2009. Check it out if you’re in New York City. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Places to Shop: A Cut Above in Antwerp

Written by Nalden: A Cut Above is a new boutique in Antwerp presenting a nice selection of quality goods. Started by FLO & Jakob their focus on classic designs and quality materials over novelty and hype makes them a refreshing destination. They have brands like Penfield, Gourmet, Brixton, WoodWood, Public School NYC, UBIQ and many more. The store is a bit hard to find if you’re not familiar with Antwerp. You can say it’s hidden in the city’s fashion center. The space is not big, but the open windows generate a spacey inviting vibe. You know, that ‘always open’ feeling. The two owners are known by their Belgium generosity and give a high level of service. A Cut Above is definitely able to fulfill your needs in terms of high-end street fashion. Places to Eat: Eat Records in Greenpoint Brooklyn

I’ve had many conversations with friends about opening the perfect “spot.” You know, a place for your friends and people with similar interests to hang out. No matter what, we always came to the same conclusion – food and vinyl records were the winning combination.

Eat Records, in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, is a hybrid record store and cafe. It’s a place for foodies and vinyl enthusiasts to meet in a place that’s social but unpretentious. It’s the perfect place to sip some coffee, eat a mixed green salad and discuss the importance of Madlib’s oeuvre.

Places to Shop: Amsterdam's 290 Square Meters

Written by Nalden: Ah, Amsterdam – back home. I don’t know where to start when writing about one of my favorite boutiques, 290 Square Meters. I should probably start with this simple fact – it’s the best boutique in Europe. A bold and personal statement indeed – hahaha.

Last year the store moved from the KNSM islands in the North to the center of Amsterdam and went from 90sqm to 290sqm. They literally stayed low profile and underground. They’re located within a huge basement near Waterlooplein. So let’s say you find the store, walk down the stairs and see this huge space filled with clothes, gadgets, art, shoes, bikes, jewelry, perfume and who knows what more. Everything hand picked by the owner and his wife. You could say it’s their personal closet. The level of attention for their customers is also amazingly high. In the Netherlands we have a saying; “Klant is Koning” which basically means the customer is king. Well it looks like they invented that saying. We recommend visiting next time you’re in the area.

Places to Shop: Zurich's Grandism & Making Things

Written by Nalden: During a quick business visit in Zurich I had the chance to see some of city center too. My friends showed me two of the nicest boutiques in this Swiss capitol of gold. Our first stop was Grandism. A fresh small boutique with all the usual street wear suspects – brands like Nike, Undercrwn, MHI by Maharishi, Adidas, Visvim, Idiom, etc. To be honest, I was expecting more Swiss brands. I was also amazed by the amount of sneakers Grandism carries. There was a wide variety of top caliber sneakers. Also, as a magazine junkie I was satisfied with the selection of publications. Too bad my German isn’t good enough to connect with the local print but the artwork was reason enough to function as eye candy. The store is located in a new area, kind of away from the touristic stuff, which is good for me. I always get panic attacks in those big malls. Grandism is a recommended visit while you’re in Zurich.
