hotel diagonal barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful city. The food, culture and people are among many reasons anyone would want to visit. We’re particularly drawn to the juxtaposition of traditional and modern architecture. A great example of this is Diagonal Barcelona, a hotel located near Agbar Tower. These two modern feats play handily against the more traditional stylings of old Barca. Diagonal, designed by Juli Capella and completed in 2004, has gained recognition for its chunky dimensions, eccentric lighting and overall strong service. Next time you’re in Barcelona, check it out.

black tower of light

A modern styled solution finds its way atop an architectural structure dating back to the late 1800s in Porto, Portugal. The classic Grande Porto Hotel partnered with architects Cremascoli, Okumura & Rodrigues to refurbish its traditional accommodations with something more modern. Many may wonder what that black tower like structure is. Well, it turns out the slate “tower” is a great solution for the hotel by creating more space which is being used for a workout gym and small bar.

We like how Arch Daily describes it: “Although we may sometimes be partial to additions that blend with the existing, this project strongly creates its own identity, as it is an estranged element.  It doesn’t attempt to fool the observer as an original part of the hotel, but rather embraces its place in this contemporary era to add a new architectural statement to the traditional.” Click Read More for additional information and visit Arch Daily for more photos.

meet the neighbors

Written by Elsa Brown: With the opening of their outpost at Ace Hotel, fashion retailer Opening Ceremony found opportunity to expand its New York presence, and build new connections in a previously unexplored neighborhood. While settling into Ace’s area—29th and Broadway in the Flatiron District—members of the OC team met owners of other shops and restaurants housed at the hotel. They recently posted introductions to their new neighbors on their blog. The result is a nice survey of the people and histories behind a small community of New York businesses. Meet the owners of The Breslin restaurant, cult shop Project No. 8A, roasters Stumptown Coffee, No. 7 Sub Shop and Ace Hotel at the Opening Ceremony Blog.

Written by Elsa Brown: FriendHouse Hotel’s name could be a reference to its relationship with the environment in which it was built. Recently completed on the Orel River in Ukraine, the designers of the ecohotel considered the project’s effect on the environment in every respect. Detailed plans mapped out how the construction would impace the site, and only eco-friendly material were used: clay, reed, wood and stone.

The space blends organic forms with clean design, with rooms that resemble austere updates of cozy hobbit dwellings. The hotel is a single-floor group of buildings featuring open yards, gardens, parks, and even an apple orchard—a reference to local legend about a amiable farmer who invited guests over to gather the fruit twice a year. capsule hotel

PLACES: Sometimes it’s all about utility. 9h Capsule Hotel in Kyoto takes this ideal and merges it with clean design. Reminiscent of the Paco Cube, Jane Hotel and Ablimo – it specializes in the necessities and wraps its entire brand around the concept.

Design Boom has the scoop: “9h (nainawasu) is a new capsule hotel that offers luxury in a minimum living space. The 9h capsule hotel and all amenities were designed by Fumie Shibata of Design Studio S, which she founded in 1994. With her team, she defined the elements necessary for a ‘minimal transit space’ in big cities in Japan. The product designer has been pursuing the 9h project as a creative director for 3 years. The first hotel will open in December this year…” Click Read More for additional information and photos.

hotel palomar

PLACES: Philadelphia isn’t known for its boutique hotels, but the City of Brotherly Love is trying. Some of our favorite Center City hotels include The Sofitel, AKA and now we can add Hotel Palomar to the list. Conveniently located near bustling Rittenhouse Square, Hotel Palomar is a well designed eco and pet friendly luxury hotel.

As you enter the hotel, be sure to look above to catch an unexpected and colorful portrait of Benjamin Franklin – one of Philadelphia’s most famous historical figures. Hotel Palomar has 230 rooms decorated in a warm earth tone color palette with a modern aesthetic offset by vibrantly colored art deco accents and artwork by Philadelphian artists. In addition to the usual amenities that make a hotel stay convenient and relaxing, the hotel also has a fitness center and hosted evening wine hour in the hotel’s living room. Adjacent to Hotel Palomar is Square 1682, a restaurant headed by notable chef Guillermo Tellez serving American cuisine fused with flavors found around the world.
