If you’re like most gadget travelers, you’ve probably needed a recharge at some point in your trip. We’ve found ourselves looking for outlets on more than one occasion. You hunt and hunt only to find they’re crowded with plugs from other travelers. Luckily many airports are catching on and providing more electrical sources. For example we saw usb outlets at San Francisco’s SFO Airport. And more recently, while reading one of our favorite blogs we came across Jeff Sanquist’s useful resource – Airpower Wiki. It’s a breakdown of power and wifi access points at major airports – both domestic and international. Check it out.

Shuttling between New York, Philadelphia and DC has given us a quiet love for train travel. Even though Amtrak has its fair share of delays, we still can’t get enough of the train. We’re convinced the air is filtered with some form of caffeinated intoxicant. Why is it that when we step on the train, we’re energized and able to complete more work on our laptop then seems humanly possible? But’s that’s a whole other article. Late last month Amtrak announced they will be offering discount passes to US Residents. If you ride the train often, you definitely want to check out this program. It used to be offered only to passengers who lived outside the country.
As USA Today reports: “The passes are available for 15, 30 and 45 days of travel. The 15-day pass offers eight segments of travel for $389. The 30-day pass offers 12 segments of travel for $579. The 45-day pass offers 18 segments of travel for $749.” Sounds good to us. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

The thought of getting around Tokyo by rail can be daunting. The crowds. The options. Trying to understand the maps. But in actuality you’ll find that the Tokyo rails are among the most organized subways any city has to offer.
Dave Demerjian recently wrote a great piece for Wired’s Blog about getting around via Tokyo’s subways. “With 882 stations on 14 lines, Tokyo’s amazing subway system is one of the largest – and busiest – in all the world. The system map is a twisted mass of squiggles that resembles a Jackson Pollock painting, and conditions on its trains give new meaning to the word “crowded.” It all had me more than a little nervous as I headed to Tokyo for a business trip. I say this as a seasoned traveler who has ridden subways in Paris, London, Munich and even Buenos Aires. I had managed to negotiate all of them without much trouble. But Tokyo? C’mon. Turns out I needn’t have worried.” Check out the rest of Dave’s article – here.

When we came back from Tokyo one of the resonating memories was how organized the smoking areas were. They had smoking booths conveniently placed throughout the city. And each area was neatly arranged with benches and places to dispose cigarette butts. When we returned to the states, the butt littered streets illustrated how nice it would be to have some of Tokyo’s urban engineering. That’s why we got excited when we saw the Smoking Bench by designer Fatih Baltas. This well designed street furniture would help any city with its aesthetic appeal.
