VOLKSWAGEN'S TAXI

volkswagon taxi

We have an abnormal love for taxis and how they move around the urban grid. Over the past decade it’s been interesting watching their evolution. Electronic payments, GPS and touch screen computers are among a few of our favorites. And more recently, we’ve discovered a new concept vehicle by Volkswagen.

As Wallpaper* Magazine describes it, “Volkswagen’s new conceptual electric taxi for London mixes cutting edge technology with deliberately tongue-in-cheek details such as the silver Union Jack on the roof and the City of London’s coat of arms on the sides and dashboard. These embellishments conceal serious intent; the global market for taxis is burgeoning, but hampered by a host of ageing models long past retirement age.” Read the full article here. We also have a few photos posted below. Click Read More to view.

ELECTRIC RACER

speed ev

As Taj said, “Someone make this a train and put it on the east coast.” I couldn’t agree more. Although it’s not likely in the immediate future, it’s exciting to see developments like the Buckeye Bullet open new possibilities. Just recently Ohio State’s lithium powered Buckeye Bullet 2 shot across the UTAH desert at an average speed of 291 miles per hour breaking the world land speed record for a battery powered vehicle. We have a few photos from the event. Pretty awesome. Click Read More for additional information.

UNDERWATER SUBWAY

subway

I ride the train often, and on one of my regular routes we pass a train yard where you can see rows and rows of cars waiting for maintenance. Some look brand new while others look like they’ve seen better days. As we pass I always wonder what they do with the ones they want to retire. Well Animal Magazine points our attention to the fantastic photography of Stephen Mallon. In his work he documents the submergence of hundreds of NYC Subway cars. According to Animal, “They were ferried and dumped in the Atlantic Ocean to get reenacranted as articial reefs…” Below, you can find a few pictures from Stephen’s collection, but visit Animal for the full gallery. Also, Stephen has a show coming up September 10 – 13 at the Front Room Gallery in NYC. Check it out if you’re in town.

HELSINKI BIKE LANES

bike lane

Safety doesn’t come easy. Despite the brilliant efforts of safety campaigns, many city officials still don’t get it. There’s no excuse for a city without bike lanes. It’s obvious they improve road safety. That’s why we appreciate Lansivayla’s take on the issue. The Helsinki based collective invited people to join their guerilla operation and paint a bike lane on Hameentie – one of the main roads leading through the Northern part of central Helsinki. Not only is this generally awesome, it looks beautiful too. We also love that the idea was inspired by a few creative folks in Berlin. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

TOUR DE RETROSPECT

The Boston Globe’s Big Picture never disappoints. After major events we can’t wait to see their photography. As the Tour de France came to a close last weekend, with Spain’s Alberto Contador claiming his third win, the Big Picture was there to capture the tour’s greatest moments. It’s a two part series displaying the terrain, beauty and challenges facing the cyclists. We have a few photos below to give you an idea of their beauty, but you should head over to the Big Picture to see them in their true glory.

ALTA VELOCIDAD ESPANA

barcelona

Written by Elsa Brown: A recent New York Times piece explores how the Alta Velocidad EspaƱa (AVE) is transforming travel in Spain, and potentially all of Europe, with its new model of customer service. The high-speed train was built in 2008, and the volume of passengers it shuttles between Barcelona and Madrid has already surpassed those that make the journey by plane. AVE cuts the time of a car trip more than in half, and beats air travel because of convenience, but those aren’t the only reasons the rail is catching on.

The train’s creators and marketers focused on guest experience, developing AVE as an upscale form of transit. It costs about as much as a plane ticket, but the ease and comfort this affords are attracting repeat customers. According to the article, the service offers, “assigned reclining seats, computer outlets, movies, headsets, good food and even gloved attendants,” which travelers in Spain are quickly finding hard to resist. Other benefits: the train’s popularity may help alleviate the country’s overall carbon emissions.

GENEVA AUTO SHOW

car show

INTERNATIONAL AUTO.

This Thursday kicks off the International Auto Show in Geneva. There’s plenty of excitement surrounding the event. We’re looking forward to seeing new hybrids, exotic super cars and daring four door hatchbacks. Sure we’ve all seen the extra glossy cgi’d concepts, but it’ll be great to see the actual vehicles. One of our favorite bloggers from the Honeyee Mag line-up, Mai Ikuzawa, provides an early glimpse of the show. Click Read More for additional photos and information.
