We discovered Jim Denevan when his artwork used beach-coasts as a canvas. Now, we find him trekking to the far reaches of Siberia to create another massive installation. The Anthropologist traveled with Jim to document his work. As they describe it: “Jim Denevan is in pursuit of the impermanent. From the vanishing curl of a wave to sand briefly stilled between tides, nature’s fleeting moments are his stock-in-trade. The frozen surface of Siberia’s Lake Baikal presented a shifting, snow-blanketed canvas for Denevan’s specific brand of art: massive geometrical patterns carved into the earth, ever vulnerable to the elements.” Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Barcelona is a beautiful city. The food, culture and people are among many reasons anyone would want to visit. We’re particularly drawn to the juxtaposition of traditional and modern architecture. A great example of this is Diagonal Barcelona, a hotel located near Agbar Tower. These two modern feats play handily against the more traditional stylings of old Barca. Diagonal, designed by Juli Capella and completed in 2004, has gained recognition for its chunky dimensions, eccentric lighting and overall strong service. Next time you’re in Barcelona, check it out.

It’s easy to fall in love with Barcelona’s market culture. One of the city’s standouts is Mercat Santa Caterina. The harmony of Caterina’s modern architecture mixed with its more traditional underpinnings make it a must see destination. Not to mention its array of fresh produce offered from a variety of vendors – you might find yourself stuck there for hours. The redevelopment of Santa Caterina didn’t come easy but it was worth it. After a serious investment of time and money, the talents of Enric Miralles (now deceased) and his wife Benedetta Tagliablue elevated the market back to prominence.
