TOKYO'S VENDING MACHINES

tokyo vending machine

We live in the future. Look at the picture above. It’s a vending machine that can predict what kind of soda you’d like. When we visited Tokyo we were floored by the vending culture. We tried to explain it to people but it’s something you have to see for yourself. Designboom has a terrific post covering Tokyo’s latest incarnation of the soda machine. Scattered throughout subways, and designed by Fumie Shibata from Design Studio S, the Acure Digital Vending Machine features a 47-inch touchscreen display and camera. By using sensory data to determine a few basic attributes of its customer it quickly offers up suggestions. We have a few photos posted below, but check out the full report on DB for more information.

ECRU CAFE & BAR

ecru cafe and bar

Ecru Cafe wears its heart on its sleeve. The quaint spot uses a tactic all cafe and bars should employ – large windows! Nothing’s better than walking through a city and seeing an atmospheric coffee shop on the horizon with a warm drink waiting inside for you. That’s the real brillance of Hajime Mizutani’s shop design. The small cafe is minimal with its focus on the drinks and people. Nothing more. Nothing less. It’s really clean. And frankly, we can’t argue with that because when we visit a coffee shop those are our primary interests too. Below we’ve posed a few photos of Ecru Cafe and Bar located in Fukuoka, Japan. Stop by if you find yourself in the city looking for an esspresso and good conversation. Click Read More additional information.

NAN ZHOU NOODLES

nan zhou

Written by Catzie Vilayphonh: Perhaps it’s the fault of Campbell’s manufacturing that soup is overlooked as a full meal. Yet for many Asian cultures, soup, especially the kind accompanied by noodles, is so prevalent it’s served as breakfast, lunch and dinner at establishments that serve just that. While the Japanese have a monopoly on perfecting the ramen (the film Tampopo is a prime example of this), a discussion about Vietnamese cuisine is incomplete without a bowl of pho. The latter has been my usual go-to for soup cravings, but when I’m too lazy to flavor my broth my next favorite is noodle soup from the Nan Zhou Hand Drawn Noodle House in Philadelphia’s Chinatown…

This isn’t surprising considering it’s the brainchild of consummate entrepreneur, Nigo. Drawing from his usual stable of talent, he partnered with Masamichi Katayama for the restaraunt’s design and build out. SCUP'S IN THE HARBOUR

Scup Boston

Written by Catzie Vilayphonh: Sometimes the journey to the restaurant is half the adventure of enjoying a great meal. Breakfast at Boston’s Scup’s in the Harbour is exactly that. Tucked away in the cut of East Boston’s harbor, behind a Coast Guard gate, is a little breakfast and lunch joint owned by Wendy Saver and Dave Rockwood.

Named after a dog they rescued in the marina, to get to Scup’s involves walking through a shipyard, which was foreign even to my Bostonian eating partner. When you walk into the restaurant, it feels like being at a friend’s indoor barbeque. The ordering system is really personable. For example you select from the chalkboard menu then stand by a little door opening at the kitchen, where Wendy takes your order while also suggesting other notable additions. There are a handful of breakfast specials to choose from, but the standout items are the BLT Breakfast sandwich and the Millionaire’s Bacon. I especially like Scup’s BLT with a fried egg. Unlike other morning sandwiches that use some form of scrambled patty, Scup’s fries their egg with a semi-runny yolk! Whether sunny-side up or over medium, I have always loved the rich runny yellow that mixes into whatever condiment (in this case, Scup’s homemade smoked tomato ketchup) to make an even more buttery sauce – but having it in a perfectly proportioned sandwich was heaven in my mouth.ut having it in a perfectly proportioned sandwich was heaven in my mouth.
