GUESTHOUSE WEST

guesthouse

Written by Terry Milan: We love the styling of Notting Hill’s Guesthouse West. Located in London’s prominent shopping district, this hotel packs all the warmth of a Bread & Breakfast matched with the detailed sophistication of a boutique. Interestingly, the Guesthouse West was built in Edwardian times as a family home, but still retains its friendly atmosphere. The lounge, terrace and gardens add to the overall experience of the stay. We have a few photos located below. Click Read More to view.

HOTEL LE BRISTOL PARIS

Yue Minjun

The unique works of Yue Minjun and Zhan Wang are on display at Paris’ Hotel Le Bristol. The thought provoking installation captures the works of Yue Minjun in a new and brilliant form. The Saatchi Gallery described his previous paintings as, “Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjun’s paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical enquiry and contemplation of existence. Drawing connotations to the disparate images of the Laughing Buddha and the inane gap toothed grin of Alfred E. Newman, Yue’s self-portraits have been describe by theorist Li Xianting as a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China.” Now you can view his works in larger than life form thanks to the Enrico Navarra Gallery. SOHO HOUSE

soho house

The Soho House’s creative direction is one of our personal favorites. They brilliantly blend modern aesthetics with warmer elements so each space feels warm and inviting. We’ve seen hotel brands implement this well (i.e., Ace and others). But there are few that hit it on the head like Soho House. With major expansions across all fronts, the Soho House skillfully adopts small characteristics of their locations while maintaining their own distinctive style. We recently discovered a wonderful interview with Soho House’s founder Nick Jones. It provides a nice look into the inner workings of the brand and how it all started. DIAGONAL BARCELONA

hotel diagonal barcelona

Barcelona is a beautiful city. The food, culture and people are among many reasons anyone would want to visit. We’re particularly drawn to the juxtaposition of traditional and modern architecture. A great example of this is Diagonal Barcelona, a hotel located near Agbar Tower. These two modern feats play handily against the more traditional stylings of old Barca. Diagonal, designed by Juli Capella and completed in 2004, has gained recognition for its chunky dimensions, eccentric lighting and overall strong service. Next time you’re in Barcelona, check it out.

FLOATING WORLD COMICS

portland

On a trip to Portland I stopped by Floating World Comics – the city’s premiere comic book store. Whether you’re a fan, collector or someone searching for a little inspiration, you have to stop by and check them out. And, while I’m sure “Comic Book Store” is a badge they wear with pride, when I visited I got a sense the shop represents way more. On this day I watched people queue up outside and wait patiently for the store owner, Jason Leivian to open up. Luckily, I snuck in early to watch Jason’s pre-open routine. He’s a hurricane of energy and knows exactly what he’s doing. After everything was arranged he spared a moment to discuss with me how it all started and what makes Floating World special.

INSPIRED BY ICELAND

iceland

We’ve been plotting to make a trip to Iceland for ages. There’s something mysterious and exciting about the destination. I remember being at a barbeque one summer and a friend of ours was selling everything he had so that he could go there to quietly make music outside the din of NYC. That was my first memory where I thought I have to check this place out. The second is the following video by Inspired by Iceland.

Sure there’s been tons of news about Iceland’s volcano, ash and how to pronounce its name. But I think the Inspired by Iceland project does an excellent job of redirecting this media coverage to all the positives. As they describe it: "The eruption in Eyjafjallajökull has given Iceland media attention like never before. The downside of course is that people are nervous about coming to Iceland at the moment. Some think that the whole land is covered with ash and that Iceland is in a state of emergency. The truth is that only a very small part of Iceland is being influenced by the eruption. This is of course a big challenge for Iceland because tourism is a big and important part of the Icelandic economy. For that reason the Icelandic state has teamed up with the tourism industry to get the true message across about Iceland.” Click Read More for additional information and to watch the video.
