Ever since my first kaleidescope I’ve appreciated the beauty of distortion. And it’s Serge Mendezhiyskogo’s subtle distortion that makes his art so beautiful. Part pixelated dream world and part post card, his art re-imagines the traditional travel poster. We’d love to have a few of these hanging at the studio. View more examples of his work below.

A modern styled solution finds its way atop an architectural structure dating back to the late 1800s in Porto, Portugal. The classic Grande Porto Hotel partnered with architects Cremascoli, Okumura & Rodrigues to refurbish its traditional accommodations with something more modern. Many may wonder what that black tower like structure is. Well, it turns out the slate “tower” is a great solution for the hotel by creating more space which is being used for a workout gym and small bar.
We like how Arch Daily describes it: “Although we may sometimes be partial to additions that blend with the existing, this project strongly creates its own identity, as it is an estranged element. It doesn’t attempt to fool the observer as an original part of the hotel, but rather embraces its place in this contemporary era to add a new architectural statement to the traditional.” Click Read More for additional information and visit Arch Daily for more photos.

Skyscrapers are beautiful. They’re an architectural feet of significant magnitude, but still, while walking through the city your average skyscraper can easily fade into the nonstop din of a city’s hustle. That’s what makes Brazilian photographer Bruno Cals’ work so special. He causes pause. With his photography, Bruno takes a second to actually look up.
Entitled Horizons, Cals’ collection of architectural photographs “explore the limits of two-dimensionality, and articulate a radically different perspective on a commonplace visual scenario. In expressing this fresh point of view, Bruno Cals has invoked contrasting themes of possibility versus impossibility, presence versus emptiness, and search versus satisfaction.” His images showcasing buildings in São Paulo, Tokyo and Buenos Aires are on display at the 1500 Gallery until July 31, 2010. Helmut Lang is the epitome of minimalist fashion design – so much so that his work could be overlooked or quickly passed over when browsing through clothes. But this is in no way an indication of the quality and craftsmanship of his work or the respect and influence he has had on designers and fashion enthusiasts. In an article by The Independent, Kay Barron, who is Grazia’s fashion news and features editor, says “He was the king of minimalism; him and Jil Sander. It was all about the power of the white shirt, and really going back to basics after the excess of the 1980s; after shoulder pads and extravagant dressing, it felt fresh.”
If you aren’t familiar with Lang’s design, then you’re in luck. As part of their Turn of the Century exhibit, which explores and celebrate how fashion has changed since the 18th century, the Bath Fashion Museum is showcasing over 20 pieces (circa 1997-2005) donated by Helmut Lang himself. The exhibit starts May 1. Click Read More for additional information.

We love reading. There’s nothing like curling up with a good book and getting lost in a story while you anxiously flip through the pages in anticipation for what may come next. Many weekends go by where we spend hours at the bookstore searching for the next great novel and browsing through endless amounts of magazines. If you love books as much as we do, you’ll definitely enjoy the Festival of Books hosted by the LA Times.
Held at the UCLA Campus from April 24-25, the annual festival was developed to promote literacy and is a huge gathering of young & old book lovers as well as well-known and upcoming authors. The outdoor festival offers panel discussions, speakers, book signings, outdoor stage shows, culinary demonstrations and comedy all against the backdrop of local music groups under the California sun. Families can enjoy free outdoor stage shows offering book readings and plays. Children authors like R.L Stine of the Goosebumps series and Megan McDonald of Judy Moody series are some of the included guests as well as astronaut Buzz Aldrin, comedian Sarah Silverman and actor Holly Robinson Peete. In addition to stage shows, there will be panel discussions and speakers. Free tickets are required for the panel discussions due to limited seating but you could purchase a panel pass giving you access to 5 panel and speaker tickets before they are made available to the general public. There is also a mobile scavenger hunt where you can win a 16BG iPad. Click Read More for additional information.
