ABANDONED RELAXATION PARK

relaxation park

Written by Elsa Brown: The intrigue of abandoned buildings is often connected to the histories they hold but a derelict structure at Torrevieja Relaxation Park in Spain is interesting for just the opposite reason. Designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito, the pavilion was built in 2006 and was the first of an intended three structures that would create a landmark for the coastal town. The building, it was hoped, would attract visitors in search of retreat, as well as the attention of the contemporary architecture community. But just four years later, the only structure from the project that was ever completed has already fallen to ruin. Shortly after the pavilion was built, the coast management department halted the project indefinitely. For now, it seems, Ito’s building is destined to deteriorate, an abandoned landmark with unintended appeal.
