NEW YORK'S PHOTOGRAPHER

After ten years in the making, a documentary about legendary New York photojournalist Bill Cunningham, is finally complete. Wearing his signature blue coat while biking through the streets of NYC, 80 year old Bill Cunningham travels around the city photographing all the fashion that New York has to offer. Cunningham heads-up a weekly New York Times photographic column On the Street that showcases fashion trends as well as “Evening Hours” which covers charity events.
Fittingly titled Bill Cunningham New York, the 88 minute documentary gives its audience unprecedented access into Cunningham’s work. One may think to themselves ‘How in the world did these documentarians fit 10 years of footage into 88 minutes?’ Well, eight years was spent convincing Bill Cunningham to be a part of the project. Director Richard Press says, “It started in 2000…Phillip (producer of the film) and I approached Bill. He just pooh-pooed the idea. He couldn’t entertain it. He said, ‘Why me? There’s no subject here.’” Thankfully, after seeing a short video by Richard Press during an event for which Richard Cunningham was being honored by the Citizens Committee for New York City, Mr. Cunningham finally agreed to participate. Bill Cunningham New York premiered at the New Director/New Films at The Museum of Modern Art on March 24th. We can’t wait for a full release nationwide.
