GRAND CANAL SQUARE

Written by Elsa Brown: With the opening of Daniel Liebskind’s Grand Canal Theater last month, renovation plans for Dublin’s Grand Canal Square were nearly complete. Yet, transformation of the previously industrial waterfront just recently reached its conclusion with the opening of a plaza designed by Martha Schwartz Partners. Landscape architects and urban designers from the firm planned the outdoor space with the intention of creating a “connective tissue” between Grand Canal Theater and nearby new construction in the revamped city hub.

The design is the result of careful navigation of the site’s temperamental terrain. Installed over the remains of a one-story parking garage, the plaza needed venting, which the designers disguised in planters and benches made from specially fabricated, perforated metal. The main objective, however was to create a, “vibrant, energetic space.” With neon green criss-crossed paths, a cascading marble fountain and mysterious red posts that light up at night, the plaza appears to be succeeding.
