JON NAAR

In 1972 Jon Naar arrived in New York City where he began capturing a rebellious expression found in the city’s streets. To him, graffiti was a social-political phenomenon that needed to be documented. Its nascent stages communicated the exact energy that drew him to New York. It also uniquely represented the muse that fueled his photographic career. So when Jon’s book The Faith of Graffiti debuted, it was met with a lot of acclaim and criticism. But more importantly, however viewed, it sparked a necessary public conversation about whether graffiti is a respectable artform.
