An interesting shift in attitude is reported by Newsweek this week. “Anti-Americanism has been Canada’s defining intellectual ailment for generations. Not the fire-breathing hatred felt in some parts of the world, or even the elitist sneer directed westward from across the Atlantic; it was always a more neighborly, eye-rolling disapproval that reached its zenith under George W. Bush. In 2003, Canada rejected American entreaties to join in the invasion of Iraq, and the Canadian press bristled with shrill attacks on the neocon agenda…”

More news from Jerusalem. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won’t bend on his opposition to a settlement freeze when he meets the American and Palestinian leaders in New York, a top aide said Monday.

As reported by the Economist: “Jerusalem Day, a traditional time for fellow Muslims to show solidarity with the Palestinians, provided the opportunity for the Iranian opposition’s first big march for several weeks. People sneaked green ribbons into their pockets, anxious to demonstrate their support for Iran’s Green Wave opposition movement but equally keen to avoid a beating from government militia. But as the crowds swelled, people became bolder and anti-government chants rang out…”

China turns 60… “Sixty years ago Mao Zedong stood before a sea of people atop Tiananmen Gate proclaiming, in his high-pitched Hunan dialect, the founding of the People’s Republic of China and that the Chinese people have stood up! The moment was marked with pride and hope. The communists’ victory had vanquished the Nationalist regime, withstood the vicious onslaught of the Japanese invasion and overturned the century of foreign encroachment on China’s territory. Moreover, Mao and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) came to power without significant external support — theirs was largely a homegrown revolution…”
