JOSE JAMES & THE DREAMER

Written by Joanne Lam: Sometimes we forget how good it is to take things slow. Thankfully, we have jazz crooner José James’ velvet voice to remind us of this luxury, this overlooked choice of ours to caress time rather than to race against it. The best reminder is undoubtedly the track Desire from James’ debut album The Dreamer. His subtle vocals weave effortlessly between the piano accompaniment, the percussion and the bass; together the layers create an endless soundscape that, despite its indulgence in slowness, builds up to a moment of increased rhythmic urgency. “But then I awoke to your touch,” whispers José, and with those words everything falls back to where it once was. It’s good to take things slow.
