City Innovations: Vancouver's Green Convention Centre

Written by Joanne Lam: As one of the newest additions to the city’s skyline, the Vancouver Convention Centre is noticeable not only for its architectural elegance, but also for its environmentally friendly design. One of the most noticeable features is the lush green rooftop, a six-acre area of indigenous plants that grow by using rainwater as their main source of irrigation. Thanks to its prime location along the waterfront, the Convention Centre also runs its central heating and cooling systems by using seawater to control the temperature. Combined with one of the city’s most stringent recycling and energy-saving programs, the Vancouver Convention Centre is an innovative project that promotes sustainability as a practice as well as a source of inspiration for modern design.
