NOUVELLE VAGUE

Written by Joanne Lam: When we think of 80’s New Wave music, synthesizer pop or darker post-punk sounds are first to come to mind. Nouvelle Vague’s cover of “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, however, bears resemblance to neither of these descriptions; instead, the song features a bossa nova-style groove and gentle female vocals – bossa nova being the Portuguese term for New Wave, and nouvelle vague the French equivalent. Using this wordplay as a source of musical inspiration, Nouvelle Vague instills a cool, laid-back sensibility in an unsuspecting Joy Division classic, both versions of which we love.
