Global Affairs: Lights Out for Earth Hour

This past weekend cities around the world celebrated Earth Hour – a global observance for energy conservation. Started in Sydney, Austrailia in 2007 the event continues to pick up steam as more and more cities adopt the tradition. The Boston Globe’s Big Picture captured the event as it unfolded across the world.

BG reports: “More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions.” They’ve collected a series of photographs from the city and in viewing each one you can click it to see them fade from ON to OFF.
