Art & Culture: Sketches of a Beautiful Woman in Toronto

When I see Anser’s work it gives me the same feeling I had when I first saw Swoon’s work in the LES. Toronto and New York both feel alive and I enjoy when artists personify that feeling in an image. These styles marry well with city settings. They pop up randomly as you tour the city, almost to suggest that the city is always watching – even when you forget.
The Torontoist has a wonderful interview with Anser – the creator of the drawing pictured above. “Over the past two years, one hundred (or so) faces have popped up on walls around the city. Most were completed in stages: a quick sketch of a woman done one night in black paint might grow blue eyes, brown hair, and earrings soon after, provided she hadn’t already been painted over.
