Travel Briefing: Nikki Chung's Visual Representation of Tourism

Visual representations of travel are awesome. We get consumed with the graphs, animations and indicators that analyze people’s movement around the globe. Dopplr has a fantastic annual report that is generated for each of its users showing their travels over the past year. Scientists from the Zurich School of Applied Sciences created a video simulation of every commercial flight in the world over a 24 hours period and condensed it into 72 seconds. And now, one of our favorites, Nikki Chung has created a series of guidebooks quanitfying the collective experience of leisure travel by visually respresenting global tourist movements during one year.

From Nikki’s website: “Using data from the UN World Tourism Organization I made a guidebook to every country in the world. The number of pages in each book corresponds to the number of tourist arrivals in that country in 2005. When viewed on a shelf, one year’s worth of ‘experience’ is presented in a condensed physical model that can be shifted and rearranged to visualize where tourists travel and where they don’t.” Click Read More for additional photos and information.
