Art & Culture: Tokyo uses Grass instead of Pavement

Sometimes you think you’ve seen it all and then graphic artists prove you wrong. The creative team of Ryo Taguchi, Yuichiro Imamura and Imakawa tackle an interesting concept. What if Tokyo’s pavement was replaced with grass? It’s a complete revision of the urban setting with photographs of echoing fantasy. Shibuya crossing looks like the perfect futbol pitch. And, Harajuku looks like a park. It’s a provocative play on city expectations. Be sure to check it out.

The photos also serve as an awareness tool. As reported by C Scout Japan: “While new development projects in Tokyo are increasingly prioritizing green space (Tokyo Midtown Shopping Complex is an oft-cited example), existing developed space is notoriously grey—something which is taken as matter of fact. The Green Island Project aims to encourage the reconsideration of these existing places and remind us of the potential that these already developed areas still offer.” Click Read more additional photos and information.
