Places to Eat: La Perle Noire Café

The neighborhood of Harlem has always been happening, this is no secret. It has undergone numerous cultural and economic shifts since it was incorporated into New York City proper in 1873, and continues to be a source of inspiration and creative energy. We recommend taking a quick ride on any express train uptown and spending the day in this vibrant and historic enclave. In fact take the 2 or 3 express uptown to 125th and Lenox Streets, walk a few block north and visit La Perle Noire Café and Bakery. This simple yet fantastic shop proudly occupies the northeast corner of 131st and Lenox. Written by Anthony Smyrski
The cooks at La Perle Noire are particularly adept at making breakfast and coffee, especially on a windy and cold February morning. The owner and shopgirl are happy to take your order; ask for the bite-sized chocolate croissants and hot coffee, as well as the simply prepared and delicious breakfast sandwiches. The shop offers limited seating, so be sure to arrive early and stake out your location, the large storefront windows offer a great vista for people watching on Lenox Ave. Click Read More for additional information and photos.
The mission statement on their website sums up their philosophy: “Our promise and hope is to become an integral part of this community, our community’s life. We want this little corner spot to become that place you go to meet that guy or girl your best friend set you up with on that blind date; the spot you come to on a gray Saturday for hot chocolate; the quirky joint that is kid friendly and welcomes the independent writer who wants to check her email. We want to become that place where you’re sure to get a hot muffintop and a fresh cup of coffee; a sandwich, soup or salad at lunch or a baguette and pastries for dinner.” We could not put the feeling we took away from La Perle Nori any better.
