The Weekly Outlook is an editorial briefing for wejetset’s online magazine. Each week we scan international news and aggregate the stories that will likely impact their respective region and possibly the world. From economic issues to politics, we strive to deliver news links that will be useful to our readers as they navigate their local and global spaces.

Optimism hits a wall regarding possible deal on climate change. “President Obama and leaders from the rest of the world’s top economic powers acknowledged Sunday that there’s no hope of a major breakthrough over climate change by year’s end…”

Sometimes in an economic downturn creatives thrive. Time Magazine has an interesting story about Iceland’s Fashion Designers and their story after the economic crash. “In the heart of downtown Reykjavik sits a freshly painted pink building. The innards of the two-story metal structure have been gutted to make way for smooth concrete floors, diamond white walls and racks of clothing from Icelandic retailer, Nikita. Just a year ago, the same building was being readied for demolition. In its place were plans for an ultramodern shopping mall stretching several blocks across the capital’s commercial district. Then came the crash…”

Early last week, sad news hit the soccer world. Talented Goal keeper, Robert Enke, took his own life at the age of 32 after battling depression for years. “Tens of thousands of fans joined family, friends and team mates of Enke to pay their last respects to the Germany goalkeeper on Sunday, five days after his suicide shocked the country and soccer fans worldwide. At a memorial service at the Hanover 96 ground where Enke played his club football, 45,000 people, including Germany team mates and coaches dressed in black, watched as Enke’s coffin was placed in the middle of the pitch…”

Urban flight is marked by theatrics in Venice. “At high noon on Saturday, a gondola bearing a hot-pink plywood coffin decked with yellow flowers made its way down the Grand Canal. Onlookers watched from the shore and shouted greetings from the Rialto Bridge before the boat alighted nearby in front of the Venice city hall. Part photo opportunity, part political theater, the spectacle was the centerpiece of a fake funeral for the city of Venice. A group of prankster-provocateurs organized it to protest the fact that the number of residents in Venice’s historic center has dropped below 60,000, down from 74,000 in 1993, as rising rents and hordes of tourists have pushed thousands to the mainland.”

Uncensored or Semantics: “President Obama in Shanghai, live and uncensored? At least, that was the billing the White House wanted. The president’s advance team had been pressing the Chinese government to allow a town hall-style meeting with students Monday to be broadcast live on Chinese television. Well, it looks like Obama may get to air live, but many people won’t be able to see it.”
