“I was born in ’72 so I came of age in Philly at a period that history will probably remember as a bummer time for the city. A lot of jobs dried up; whole wide blocks were just completely rotten or blighted. Ed Rendell was mayor here for a large part of the ’90s and he was magnetic, and he really loved the city of Philadelphia, and things started changing. Ever since then—and even almost despite the Street administration, which followed Rendell’s—the city just kept on reinventing itself. One by one, little neighborhoods would start to get hot, and different things would be happening, whether it was a restaurant or venue or a retail movement. Sometimes it would just be the case of people moving to a neighborhood and really taking care of their homes.
