Travel Inspiration: A Trip to Budapest

It’s a cold, overcast December afternoon. Myself and three companions step off of a train and down onto the platform of Budapest’s Nyugati train station. I’d later learn that the beautiful steel and glass structure was designed by Gustave Eiffel, a name you may associate with the better know landmark in France which bears his name. Although somewhat exhausted from the early flight from Berlin, we were thrilled to arrive and ready to experience the Paris of the East.
Although one of Eastern Europe’s top destinations, Budapest continues to cradle numerous secrets and treasures that can be uncovered by the observant traveler. From the incredible Opera house, the spectacular Parliament building along the Danube and dozens of cafe’s that line the streets in each district – Budapest does not disappoint. Competition is fierce among the coffee houses, but we manage to come to a consensus that our favorite spot is Café Gerbaud, located at the beginning of Vaci Utca (the walking street). The citizens are friendly and approachable, despite decades of Soviet oppression. We are lucky enough to experience this amicable and intrepid spirit first hand as we celebrate our New Year’s eve with them at Oktogon square. The celebration is wild, lively and free; champagne flows and fireworks ignite with optimism.
On our last day in Budapest, we visit the Gellért thermal baths. Take note, the cue here may be long and spa etiquette can be a bit confusing for the uninitiated. However we find that the warm, rejuvenating waters are exactly what we need after four days of trekking around town. Nothing can compare to relaxing in the heated pools of the Gellérts art noveau style facilities, which date back to 1918. If you find yourself in Budapest, we certainly recommend this bit of self indulgence. Do not worry, some relaxation is good for you. If guilt still pangs, there is always time for penance while responding to your long list of unanswered e-mail when you return home!
