Art & Culture: Anthony Burrill Installation at Paris' colette

Anthony Burrill’s simplicity is charming. It draws you in at first sight. Bold lines, comfortable colors and excellent balance are among our favorite attributes when we think of his work. And, he’s back for a second round with parisian fashion boutique, colette.

Creative Review has excellent coverage of the installation. As Burrill states while discussing his recent collaboration, “I thought about what I wanted to make and knew it had to be bright, shiny and colorful,” he says. “The store is very busy, full of glittering objects, I had to make something that would stand out. I have always wanted to use perspex, the intensity of the color and shiny manufactured smooth surface fit well with the super simple images I’ve been developing.” Click Read More for additional information and a sampling of photos from the exhibit. Global Affairs: The Places We Live by Jonas Bendiksen

In a recent study, the UN forecasts that the number of slum dwellers will double within the next 25 years. And, urban slums are the world’s fastest growing human habitat. In response to these findings there’s a fantastic exhibition taking place at the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway entitled, The Places We Live. It’s a touring media installation communicating the various elements people endure while living in the world’s harshest slums. Jonas Bendiksen’s documentation is vivid, intimate and revealing. In partnership with the Nobel Peace Center, Bendiksen strives to spread poverty awareness through interviews and photography.

Here’s a brief description of the exhibit: “Life-size images and audio segments in the exhibition help create the experience of a personal encounter with the slum dwellers. Each slum is represented by one room, where all four walls are built out of rear-projection canvas. Each room contains a cycle displaying five households. For each one, a sound recording containing statements from the inhabitants is showered down from the overhead speakers. Between each display of a household, images and soundscapes of the outside environment surround the visitor.” Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Art & Culture: Shepard Fairey's Work in Boston

No gallery can recreate the feeling you get when you see Shepard Fairey’s work in its natural environment – the city. Recently, Shepard was in Boston and hit up a few locations with his work. The elements were extreme. But after 3 days, 20 degree weather, frozen paste, numb faces and frost bite, he left his mark. It’s good seeing his usual fair again. After Shepard’s recent explosion of popularity during the elections, it’s easy to forget about his range and the diversity of elements he possesses. We’re glad to see his work where it looks most comfortable – in the city again. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Travel Inspiration: Glowing Cities Under a Nighttime Sky

Here’s another fantastic stop motion video capturing the beauty of flight. As Ettebrute recounts, “On my night time flight back to SF from Amsterdam, I noticed that the lights from cities were making the clouds glow. Really spectacular and ethereal – it was really [great] seeing the impact of urban environments from a different perspective. Each glow or squiggle represents one town or city! Luckily the flight was half empty, so I was able to set up a impromptu mound made up of my bags, pillows, and blankets for my camera to sit on. We were around the midwest at the beginning of the clip, and there were fewer cities once we hit the rockies. the bridge at the end is the san mateo bridge.” Click Read More for additional information.

Places to Shop & Eat: Blake Head Shop & Vegetarian Café

Written by Tom Kirkby: In a world saturated with global chains like Amazon and Borders, the indie bookshop is a welcomed retreat for any keen reader. Blake Head is everything a local bookshop should be. It’s small, cosy and inviting. It’s staffed by people who genuinely love literature. And, the warmth of the shop is a welcoming reminder of why anyone should love reading. There’s no top ten list being shoved down your throat. It’s all about the classics.

But! if that’s not enough – imagine coupling the bookshop with York’s finest vegetarian café. Blake Head’s Café has the best homemade vegetarian food ever, and it’s standing room only come lunchtime.
