Places to Stay: Shipping Containers for Hotel Rooms

In line with the growing prefab movement, budget hotels are joining the boom. Travelodge, recently completed their container hotel made of recycled parts and shipping containers in Uxbridge UK. World Architecture News reported that “86 containers used in the Uxbridge hotel were prepared in China with plasterboard walls, electrics and bathrooms already in place before being shipped to the UK, stacked and assembled like lego pieces. The containers are simply bolted together and once installed at the site, windows are fitted, the modules are decorated and furnished, and then the exterior of the building is cladded.”

Although the idea of sleeping in a shipping container may be initially off-putting, you’ll find the naming more semantics than a true description of what a stay there would be like. In fact the hotel has received fairly good reviews and represents a growing trend of low cost hotel accommodations that are efficient in their construction and provide the bare essentials for travelers that only want a place to sleep.
