Art & Culture: Frank Gehry On The “Then What?” Factor

By James Oyedijo: There’s nothing better than feeling like you’ve accomplished something. Unfortunately, this feeling of accomplishment is fleeting because once you’ve gotten something done, you immediately realize you have to start from scratch and hopefully come up with something as impressive as what you’ve done last. This is referred to as the “then what?” factor. It’s the source of a lot frustration for creative professionals.
Frank Gehry has struggled with the anxiety the “then what?” factor can cause. In a conversation with Richard Saul Wurman at the 2002 TED conference, Gehry revealed that he still feels insecure when he begins a new project and that these insecurities are similar to what he felt when he worked on his very first project. Their conversation is candid and engaging (not to mention inspirational). They also discuss the power of failure and Frank Gehry’s most recent buildings.
