Local Culture: The Changing Streets of Harajuku

The subculture shopping district is being invaded by high street. At least that’s the contention of The Japan Times. Harajuku, Tokyo’s trendy shopping district for independent retailers, has become such a popular attraction that mainstream corporations now want a piece of the action. For example, H&M made its way into the district. For fashionistas, is it paradise lost?
In the Japan Times they assert that Harajuku’s individuality presented by local brands may be lost in the din of more common retailers. And, if that’s the case, why come to the district when you can get what’s there anywhere? Like many great eras driven by discerning youth culture, analysts are speculating that this may be the end of Harajuku’s subculture reputation. We don’t think so.
