Travel Briefing: New Coins from the UK

Written by Brittany Kleinman: For the first time in 40 years, there is reason to travel to the UK just for some change in your pocket. Three years ago the Royal Mint decided to hold a competition to redesign the coin currency of the Untied Kingdom. The competition drew over 4,000 entries but it was 26-year old Matthew Dent that prevailed as the winner. Originally from Bangor, Dent now lives and works in London as a graphic designer.

His idea takes a contemporary twist on the heraldic Shield of the Royal Arms. The final design cleverly divides one image over the six coins so that when arranged in a certain way, the coat of arms is displayed in its entirety. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Matthew says: “I found the idea that members of the public could interact with the coins the most exciting aspect of this concept. It’s easy to imagine the coins pushed around a school classroom table or fumbled around with on a bar – being pieced together as a jigsaw and just having fun with them.”

Some coins have already been released and the rest will enter circulation gradually throughout the year.
