Places to Shop: Manchester's Magma Book Store

By Guest Writer Tom Kirkby: I’m a fan of magazines. I like that I can hold them in my hand, look closely, appreciate the artwork and the effort put into making a copy. But I have obscure tastes, and my local national chain bookshop does not sell the magazines I want, so where do I look? That’s where Magma comes in.

Magma is a small and perfectly formed book and magazine shop specializing in literature focused on fashion, architecture, music and other creative interests. It was founded by Marc and Montse, two like minded individuals who were bored with their jobs and wanted a change of scene and saw the gap in the market for a decent book shop. Thus Magma was born. In early 2000 they opened their first shop on Earlham street in Covent Garden, London. And it has now expanded to two other shops in London, and one in Manchester. Click Read More for additional information and photos.

The Manchester location is my favorite. It’s bigger than the one in Covent Garden and has the perfect location – right slap bang in the fashionable Northern Quarter, and close to the skatepark. Next time you’re near either, make sure you pop in and take a look. I promise you’ll like it, and more importantly, you’ll leave with some good reading material that probably won’t find in a high-street chain or the airport shops.
