Travel Innovations: Berlin's E-Mobility Raises Some Questions

PSFK and Treehugger point our attention to an interesting dilemma shaping up in Berlin. Last Friday, Berlin Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that they’re kick starting the world’s largest effort to build a city wide electric car network which will hopefully help electric cars get on the road. Working with RWE, the city will install 500 Power Points throughout Berlin to charge the community cars. In addition, Smart and Damler AG have agreed to develop 100 electric Smart Cars for the car-share project by the end of 2009.
Sounds good right!? But various environmental groups are taking issue. Greenpeace points out that “no promises have been made about powering the electric cars using power from renewable sources.” So if coal powered electricity or other dirty sources are used, drivers would be better off using cleaner diesel fuel.* But none-the-less it’s exciting to see that city officials are looking in this direction.
