Local Events: The Speaker Project by Jaun Angel Chávez

Sound and sculpture collide in Boston. The Speaker Project is on show at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design from now until November 22. DJs, spoken word artists, vocalist and other performers will participate in a unique sculptural sound project from the mind of Juan Angel Chávez.
In the middle of MassArt’s Stephen D. Paine Gallery, Juan has installed a mulit-directional, multi-layer sound experience constructed of found materials seen everyday, such as old billboard signs, wood panel siding and traffic cones. He best describes the project in an interview with the Bostonist, “The Speaker Project is more of an experiment, in terms of function, but it is a structure that combines several aspects: sculpture, collage, architecture practices—investigating different forms and combining the forms in sculpture. And there’s a performance element to it, which is a little broader, a little more conceptual. So, the piece in essence is a box where you can put live musicians or performers and basically force the audience to participate by listening and interjecting and interacting with the object itself. That’s the simplest way I can put it.” Check it out and click Read More for additional information and photos.
