Places to Eat: Tokyo's Otemachi Cafe

By James Oyedijo: Whether it’s about being green or sustainable, both terms have become buzzwords in business. More and more companies are searching for ways to conserve while still remaining profitable. The Otemachi Cafe in Tokyo is taking this movement to another level by turning the concept of conservation into a full-on experience for their patrons….

The cafe is constructed entirely from recycled materials. Wood and marble from the old Shin-Marunouchi Building were used for the bar, old whisky barrels were turned into chairs, and mobile phones and plastic bags were melted down to make the table tops. This unique space features an indoor garden designed by Yano Tea, a winner of the Chelsea Flower Show.

The drink list ranges from scochu and whisky to fresh juices and organic beers, while the menu (designed by food researchers) features dishes like pickled vegetables, smoked salmon and capers, and chocolate mousse. There is also an interactive table that will tell you where the ingredients in your meal came from.
