Places to Eat: Edible Magazine

By Guest Writer Heather Hoskeer: The first issue of Edible Brooklyn I picked up had a photo of a man in a sleeveless tee-shirt, standing proudly behind a whole pig roasting on a spit in the driveway in front of his garage on the cover. That photo was so evocative of the hidden, delightful and slightly strange Brooklyn that is endearing and yet so difficult to describe to anyone who hasn’t experienced it. I was even happier to learn, upon reading this issue, that Edible Brooklyn is not just another pretty food magazine (though it is full of beautiful, mouthwatering photos). Edible Brooklyn is devoted to providing a forum for issues, information, news and stories relating to sustainable food and agriculture (yes, agriculture) in Brooklyn.

Maybe it is silly pride of place and certainly it is the joy of supporting my community, but I love to turn a package over and see “Made in Brooklyn.” Whether it’s beer and wine, creamy artisanal ricotta or peruvian heirloom corn, there is definitely more than a tree growing in Brooklyn these days. Edible Brooklyn is a cheerleader, not just for food from the home team, but for all those great, little ideas that will help create thriving, sustainable local communities and in doing so, bit by bit change the world at large.

Sad that you don’t live in Brooklyn? Don’t be. Like any great idea, this one just can’t be contained. There are over 30 Edible Publications published throughout the U.S. and more popping up in various communities every day. The magazines are free and available in various shops and restaurants. So, whether you find yourself in Austin, Texas or Boston, Massachusetts Edible Publications will help you indulge in local foods and products and support sustainable, green communities in the process.
