HAMBURG'S STECKELHORN 11 OFFICE BUILDING

steckelhorn

PLACES: Last month J Mayer H Architects (JMH) completed the Steckelhorn 11 office building located in Hamburg, Germany. With provocative lines and modernist color-ways it’s a stand-out structure among the more traditional buildings in the district. We wouldn’t mind having a satellite office there.

As JMH states: “Steckelhorn 11 replaces a ruinous building and fills the gap between two historic premises. the triangular-shaped lot stretches across the city block, thus allowing for a narrow façade of about 1.9 m width facing the harbor and a main elevation of about 26.4 m oriented toward steckelhörn street. the vertical design and soft setbacks of the latter pay tribute to the massing of the surrounding structures, as well as to local building-height regulations. cantilevered elements in the main facade create a series of specific spatial qualities on the inside and outside. the top floors provide additional outside space, offering a spectacular panoramic view over the city of hamburg.” Click Read More for additional information and photos.

WORKSPACES BY JOSEPH HOLMES

office space

We love checking out other peoples’ workspace. Since work spawns most of our travels, it’s interesting to see their creative laboratories. They’re like launching pads both physically and mentally. That’s why we got lost in the beautiful photos by Joseph Holmes.

Per Joseph’s artist statement: “The Workspace Project is my ongoing attempt to examine the quasi-private spaces people carve out of their public work lives. Such spaces represent a tug of war between personal expression and comfort on the one hand and the unyielding demands of work on the other. The long-term accumulation of the tokens of that struggle, over years or even decades, can be formally beautiful in a very human and touching way. The project is part of a larger series in which I ask friends and strangers to open up private spaces to my camera.” Click Read More for additional information and photos.

Places to Work: Selgas Cano Capsule near Madrid, Spain

When you’re creating inspiring work, why not work in an inspiring office? The architectural firm of Selgas Cano, located in Madrid, blends futuristic design with nature. While the shape and functionality of the space is interesting, the best feature in our opinion is the lighting and citrus motif – definitely an energy encouraging environment. Places to Work: Kultur Studio's Espaco +SOMA

Written by Phuong-Cac: I don’t know whether it’s a side effect of the gross pollution or what, but Paulistanos, or residents of Sao Paulo, are some of the most creative people as a whole I’ve ever met in my travels. They continually produce and collaborate, and consistently come up with new ideas to bring disciplines together. Rather than wait till the awesome space is completely finished to share the news, we wanted to be the first to let you in on Kultur Studio’s new workspace-slash-public spot called Espaco +SOMA in the city’s boho Vila Madalena neighborhood. You might be already familiar with Kutltur – they’re also know for their freely distributed SOMA magazine in Sao Paulo and they also handle Nike Brasil’s marketing campaigns.

Kultur renovated a warehouse into their HQ but partitioned a part of it to promote arts, music and youth culture events through weekly, early music shows for those who like to go to bed early; workshops; debates; and monthly art exhibits, like the first one to warm the house, Four of a Kind (pictured above). The first music show kicks off the sound space tomorrow. A cafe and store will eventually round out the offerings, making it a place where visitors can meet and make amigos. Add this place to your itinerary when visiting the city. Click Read More for additional information and photos.
