Great song. Great video. Director André Chocron and music group Cold Mailman team up to create a beautiful visual for their song Time is of the Essence. Set against Oslo’s skyline – they animate a group of soon-to-be demolished buildings with an EQ effect that illuminates the rhythmic pacing of the song’s contagious beat. Zaha Hadid and her architectural firm keep innovating. The recent opening of the Guangzhou Opera House in China was met with praise and celebration. Jonathan Glancey from the UK’s Guardian attended the opening and caught up with Zaha for a brief conversation about the opera house and its conceptual beginnings. From all angles, the structure is unapologetically Hadid. Reminiscent of her other works, it’s interesting to hear how she considers the functionality and tradition of the space while still maintaining her powerful branding. Our office playlist has a few new sounds thanks to Quadron. The Danish duo’s latest EP, The Average Fruit Remixes draws on inspiration from their fans by asking them to help with production duties. As they describe it, “We’re so appreciative of our fans so we created this remix contest for Average Fruit to make them a part of our story. We received submissions literally from all of over the world and our fans REALLY showed up! It was difficult to choose the winner because they were all so great, but a few stood out.” We love the tracks they selected. Be sure to check out The Average Fruit Remixes. You can also catch Quadron on tour this year with Raphael Saadiq, Fitz & The Tantrums and at SXSW.

Thanks to our friend Rucyl, we’ve discovered the eclectic sounds of Chaz Bundwick aka Toro Y Moi. His light-hearted approach to music is refreshing. And we can’t think of a better introduction than his amazing video for Still Sound. It’ll brighten anyone’s day. As Steve Daniels, the videographer describes, “Chaz and I met early on a cold and rainy day in January to shoot this ‘video’. Staying true to Chaz’ DIY aesthetic, It was just he and I, a super 8 camera, and a box full of Kodak film. As the sun made its way from the clouds, Chaz, with the help of some of his closest friends, had danced all over our town of Columbia. This was the funnest I have ever had on a film shoot. My face hurt from all the damn smiling.” Click Read More for additional information and to view the video.

Looking back, this week was audio heaven. Just when things were getting musically boring we received La Melodia’s latest, Drake leaked a track with Jay-Z and Kanye provided endless one-liners with his latest entitled Power. We had each one on repeat. But, the big catch of the week was Mark Ronson’s debut single entitled Bang Bang Bang featuring Qtip and MDNR. It’s energetic, light hearted and sonically pleasing. We’re looking forward to Ronson’s album, Record Collection. It’s slated for release this September and is rumored to feature D’Angelo & Ghostface. Sounds like a win all around. In our upcoming edition of City Notes Print (coming out soon), we traveled to Amsterdam to interview hip hop duo La Melodia. In our conversation we discuss their sound, history and the city they call home. Recently, they released a fantastic limited edition record on one of our favorite music labels, Record Breakin Music – founded by our resident music writer, Bruce Campbell. So, it’s only natural that we have him pen a few words about the project.
Written by Bruce Campbell: La Melodia consists of female MC Melodee and producer/DJ I.N.T. The duo stand for warm, soulful yet raw hip-hop music from Amsterdam. Their latest gem Chemistry / Working on It is a limited edition vinyl release (remember them). Chemistry is a return to the boom-bap style of hip hop with Melodee talking about relationships that we can all relate to. While Working on It introduces soulful newcomer, Steve Hartley. This instant classic has the perfect vibe that La Melodia is known for. As summer approaches, these songs are fitting – reminiscent of our youth when there wasn’t a care in the world. Click Read More for a sample of their sound and for additional information.
