Local Events: The International Contemporary Furniture Fair
April 30, 2008 | 07:07PMmarsha leveque

icff

We love this event. If you’re in New York May 17-20 stop by and check out the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. New York is known for attracting creatives. This is one of those events that bring together creative types in mass amounts from all over.

Furniture – or functional art – is something we all need. Whether in your home, the outdoors, place of business or school. It has the ability to instantly change your mood. After a long and stressful day or when you’ve been away for a while, there’s nothing like relaxing on your favorite couch or in your cozy bed. Also, we see hotels use furniture to paint a mood and personality for their brands. Much of this creative direction starts at events like the ICFF. The three day fair will showcase over 600 exhibitors. We recommend stopping by if you’re interested in design and furniture. The fair is open to the general public May 20. Places to Shop: NY Fashion Invades the Las Vegas Strip
March 31, 2008 | 07:51PMmarsha leveque

barneys new york

Everything about Las Vegas feels indulgent – from the super-magnified nightlife and on-going gambling, to massive hotels whose lobbies are more akin to convention centers. Las Vegas serves to please all of your senses all of the time. In recent years, the desert town has revamped their image, slowly solidifying their relevance in the modern world as one of the top US cities to visit. We’ve seen the commercials – what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.

But, Las Vegas has more to offer its tourists than an intense nightlife and gambling. The Las Vegas fashion scene has encountered a resurgence. Gone are the days of polyester suits and women with big hair. In today’s fickle fashion world, Las Vegas has worked hard to bring world renowned designers to its residents and tourists. While the Miracle Mile Shops and Fashion Show Mall can certainly hold their own with over 400 shops and restaurants combined. Ultimately there’s no comparison to the quintessential Barney’s New York...

Local Culture: What about the Red Phone Booth?
March 26, 2008 | 12:36PMmarsha leveque

phone booth

When we think of London, we think of red phone booths. Although we don’t consider using them, they are still there, quietly residing on foggy streets in our british imagination. Pretty soon, that may be the only place we’ll be able to see them… either there, a museum or on a european version of MTV Cribs where a celebrity has turned one into a refrigerator.

Since 2002 the iconic phone booth has been slowly disappearing. With an ever growing cellphone population – Britain has more cellphones than people – the need for a phone booth is becoming obsolete. For example, the use of pay phones has dropped by more than half in the past three years and 30,000 of them have been removed. Although many of them have been replaced with more modern booths that serve as wireless hotspots, we’ll miss the traditional british stylings of the red phone booth. Its design was timeless, too bad its technology didn’t fare the same.

Places to Stay: Cerulean Tower TokyoMarch 14, 2008 | 11:46AMmarsha leveque

cerulean tower

Just minutes away from Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest and most famous intersections in Japan, is a tranquil and beautifully designed hotel – Cerulean Tower Tokyu. Once you leave the busy streets of Shibuya, cross over the airwalk (pictured above) and enter the hotel lobby, there’s an immediate sense of calm that comes over you. Although the lobby is large, its minimal and modern design suppresses feelings of chaos and disorganization with hotel staff providing each guest with warm greetings and assistance.

The Cerulean Tower is a massive structure that towers over Tokyo. The designers take advantage of its size and location by situating all the guestrooms between the 19th and 37th floor, ensuring that every room has a majestic view that immediately captures your attention the moment you walk in. Travel Briefing: Eos AirlinesMarch 10, 2008 | 10:00AMmarsha leveque

eos airlines

Flying is purely functional. It’s not the trip. You take a flight to get to where you want to be. With seats that can be small and uncomfortable, food that is less than appetizing and flight delays that add unnecessary stress, flying is a part of the trip that some, including myself, would rather sleep through. But Eos Airlines is hoping to change that perspective.

The mission of Eos Airlines is to provide ultimate comfort and convenience while flying from NYC to London. And, although flights are geared for the business executive, we’d venture to say that the average person would enjoy stress free travel too. The ethos of Eos Airline is “uncrowded & uncompromising” which speaks to their ability to eliminate crowds and lines by using Eos Guides to quickly move you through security, provide each passenger with 21 square feet of space for work, listening to music on your personal entertainment system and sleeping in your 6’6” flat bed. I think this flight will be my next trip.

Travel Solution: OpenTable ReservationFebruary 19, 2008 | 08:44PMmarsha leveque

reservations

There are many reasons why we travel and it’s not always the latest and greatest attractions that propel us. Sometimes it’s a small boutique off the beaten path or an art exhibit you wouldn’t normally find in a city’s larger and well funded museum. No matter what motivates us – big or small – somewhere on that list of reasons you’ll find food. Through travel, regardless if it’s in your hometown or elsewhere, having your taste buds experience a memorable dish is always fun.

We recently came across OpenTable. It’s an online restaurant reservation company and it hopes to make reserving a table easier. By using their free online reservation system you can book your table in virtually any US and International city without hassle. Rather than relying on systems where your reservation is faxed to a restaurant awaiting confirmation, OpenTable is able to tap into the restaurant’s computerized reservation system for a seamless process. The more you book your reservation with OpenTable, the more points you earn, which then translates into a discounted bill off your next meal. No hassle, no confusion, no fuss. Give it a try and let us know what you think.

Places to Eat: Tao Las VegasFebruary 04, 2008 | 08:21AMmarsha leveque

tao

Las Vegas offers its visitors over the top, 24-hour non-stop fun and entertainment. From the moment you arrive in Las Vegas, you feel the excitement and energy of Sin City. Not only are there slot machines in the airport to get you warmed up for the heavy hitters at the luxurious casinos, but airport shuttles use casino chips as a ticket just to add to your growing gambling fever.

But Las Vegas has more to offer than just gambling – the restaurants are incredible. One of the best is Tao. Located in the ultra luxurious and breathtaking Venetian Hotel, Tao offers some of the best Asian cuisine that you’ll find in Vegas. It’s décor is a stark contrast from the neon lights and hustle and bustle of Vegas. Once you enter Tao, you feel as though you have entered Vegas’ alter ego. This multi-level bistro is beautifully decorated with Asian inspired art work, a 20 foot hand carved Buddha, waterfalls and larger than life portraits. Tao’s calming and tranquil environment relaxes the mind and prepares your taste buds for a mix of flavorful entrees and desserts. Local Events: NY's Sartorialist ExhibitionJanuary 21, 2008 | 06:31PMmarsha leveque

fashion

There’s a lot of talk about “streetwear” nowadays. Most of it centers on definition. What is streetwear, exactly? While some reduce the movement to ironic t-shirts, neon, and Nike, others see things a bit more broadly.

After working in fashion for years, Scott Schuman noticed something: there was a gap between what he was selling in the showroom and what he was seeing real people wear on the street. He decided to merge his passion for photography and fashion and started a blog entitled, The Sartorialist.

It’s simple. Schuman takes pictures of people on the street with a designer’s eye. The byproduct is inspiration for himself and his readers. The photos provide a glimpse into local culture and the fashion sense of a city. If you’re in New York, check out his first solo exhibition at Danziger Projects – 521 W. 26th Street. The opening is Tuesday, January 22nd and it runs until February 23th.

Antwerp's Quietly Loud FashionNovember 06, 2007 | 02:34PMmarsha leveque

antwerp

Recently wejetset headed to Antwerp for a couple days. Prior to our departure we turned to our favorite websites for suggestions. Cool Hunting wrote a piece about the various fashion destinations among Belgium’s quietly loud city, Antwerp. We’ve never seen a place say so much with such subtly.

Check out Cool Hunting’s suggestions: “Let’s bypass the Antwerp Six introduction, as one needn’t be a fashion historian to know that this city was built on fashion. Designers come out of Belgium with a certain confidence and willingness to take risks like a child from wonderfully supportive parents. Two full meandering days in this small city is enough to get a taste of the smorgasbord of local shop options Antwerp has to offer: from well-organized vintage to recently-graduated designer startup boutiques to established heavy-hitters of Belgian descent.”
