Instead of waiting to determine your coordinates at the subway platform, we present two web applications that’ll help you get a headstart on planning your underground travel. iSubwayMaps and MetropoliPhone offer maps for a wide variety of cities that you can view on your iPhone. Whether you’re in Chicago or Barcelona you’ll find your way.
While we enjoyed using both applications, there are a few things to consider…

Apple’s recent iPhone upgrade gave birth to new web applications that don’t require you to hack the phone. MetropoliPhone is one of them. It takes advantage of the phone’s upgraded ability to save webpages as icons on the desktop. It’s perfect for on the fly subway directions. However, functionality largely depends on the quality of data reception. Full bars and it’s great. No bars and well… If you’re underground, there’s a good chance that it’ll take a while for the map to load and a train may pass you by.

iSubwayMaps is also fantastic. They’ve compiled all of the subway maps and converted them into files that you can save on your iPhone, ipod or any phone that allows you to view images. With a few steps, the maps are saved on your phone and you’re good to go. Although this isn’t as smooth or spontaneous as MetropoliPhone, the big plus is that regardless of data reception, you can still view the map because it’s saved to your phone or portable device.
